I am delighted to accept the position of Ladies’ Captain of Fortwilliam for 2017.
I want to thank past captain Maeve McCann, for all her support. I really enjoyed being Vice Captain - it was great fun and I have many happy memories of the year. A warm welcome to Vice Captain, Mrs Patricia McBride. Patricia loves her golf and takes an active part in all aspects of the club. I wish her a most enjoyable year.
Being Captain is an honour, a privilege and a responsibility as we enter our 126th year in Fortwilliam. We have a skilled and dedicated group of ladies on our committee and in our section. When something needs doing, there’s always someone on hand to help and it is a pleasure working with the ladies.
We have had falling numbers in our section over the past few years. This situation is not unique to Fortwilliam. So this year we are introducing the CGI Women into Golf programme to encourage women to try golf over an 8 week programme on Wednesday evenings starting on 26th April 2017. So we need to attract women who might be interested in a well organised and successful programme, mothers, daughters, granddaughters, neighbours, colleagues. Please spread the word!
We will have a busy year of golf ahead. We will have our twice weekly competitions over both 9 and 18 Holes. We hope to continue with the Sunday Mixed Scrambles. Lady Captains Day is Friday 30th June. Open day for ladies is planned for Friday 4th August. Captain’s Away Day will be at an Open in Moyola Park on 9th August. ‘Bingo Bango Bongo’ has become an enjoyable fun event in our calendar.
The Lady Captain’s charity this year is Down Syndrome Association, DSA. To raise funds there will be an evening with sports psychologist, Dr Lee Sharpe, to help us get motivated and get our mental approach into gear, on Thursday 20th April 2017. If you have any problems with your golf let me know in advance and I will ask the psychologist to get these sorted for you! Come along for an enjoyable and informative evening.
This year for Captains’ charity you are cordially invited for donations if your ball goes into Campbell’s Burn at the ninth - boxes for DSA are in the bar and the pro shop.
Finally, may all the members have a great year of golf and best wishes to all the teams in the forthcoming interclub matches.
